Sure Signs of Spring!

The weather has turned decidedly warmer now and creatures are venturing out to see what spring has to offer. This pair of deer were ambling leisurely through the yard - the photos were taken through a screen - so they're a little bit fuzzy.
Best of all is that the Goldfinches have returned!! I am always thrilled to see their beautiful golden wings flitting around the feeders. Sort of the same way I feel when the Hummingbirds come home to feed in March. Goldfinches are so glorious - and they make me smile! Spring is full of these small gifts from Nature.

The following Goldfinch information is from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology - if you are a bird lover and don't know about the site yet - you owe it to yourself to check it out ! I love the feature that identifies the particular bird's song!
  • Size & Shape

A small finch with a short, conical bill and a small, head, long wings, and short, notched tail.
  • Color Pattern

Adult males in spring and early summer are bright yellow with black forehead, black wings with white markings, and white patches both above and beneath the tail. Adult females are duller yellow beneath, olive above. Winter birds are drab, unstreaked brown, with blackish wings and two pale wingbars.
  • Behavior

These are active and acrobatic little finches that cling to weeds and seed socks, and sometimes mill about in large numbers at feeders or on the ground beneath them. Goldfinches fly with a bouncy, undulating pattern and often call in flight, drawing attention to themselves.
  • Habitat

The goldfinch’s main natural habitats are weedy fields and floodplains, where plants such as thistles and asters are common. They’re also found in cultivated areas, roadsides, orchards, and backyards. American Goldfinches can be found at feeders any time of year, but most abundantly during winter.

Spring May Have arrived

This week I am beginning to think that Spring may have finally arrived here in the Pacific Northwest. I have had doors & windows open for the first time this year & it is also
the first time that I have comfortably worn short sleeves all day.

I have been busy as a scurrying ant this weekend. I am ALMOST done with my quilt top - it's l-a-r-g-e! I spent all day yesterday working on it - and should, I hope, be able to finish it off today - then I'll need to "true" it all up & get the backing measured, cut and sewn. after that I will gather the things I will need next week for the lecture on Tuesday. I am hoping that I will have a little time to sit and day dream too - sit in the SUN I mean ! Meanwhile, the evenings have allowed me to make significant progress on the largest , and most humdrum, part of the knitting for the Einstein Coat. I think it will really be nice - and I may be happy that I elected to follow the pattern !More on both of these endeavors soon. Have a happy day!

Still Water Bound For The Vernal Equinox

As the first day of Spring rapidly approaches, the rain has started again. Spring teased us with a perfect day yesterday. I opened all of the windows for a 'change of air' and sat, happily at that, in puddles of sunshine for a bit. We are anxiously awaiting the return of fair weather, and, in the mean time, it's a good time to knit, felt and sew !! Hope that wherever you are in this fabulous world you will enjoy a breath of fresh air and welcome Spring with an open heart!

Sure Signs Of Spring

For the last 13 years I have eagerly awaited the beginning of the blooms on this gorgeous tree outside the doors at work. It's always a hopeful sure sign of Spring. This winter has seemed particularly long - or maybe it's just that I feel like every winter seems longer ! Yesterday was the first really Spring like day we have had. Warm enough to have the windows all open to allow all that glorious clean, fread air in ! I escaped to take some photos twice during the day. Rain is forecast for tomorrow (Friday - but I will have these photos to look at now. I put my first hummingbird feeder of the year up this week too. I expect the males to begin arriving soon - generally they are here at least by Saint Patrick's Day. I wanted to be ready to welcome them 'home' Happy Friday to all !
