A Few Moments In The Back Yard

From Mid March through Mid July our days revolve largely - aside from work of course - hummingbird care. We now are going through about 10 quarts a day for these amazing little avian friends. Yes, I really do love them! The other visitor we seem to have on a daily basis is this "red" fox. He/she looks really scrawny but that's just the way the shed their winter coats. On a stroll through the woods you can easily find clumps of hair stranded on blackberry or other low lying bushes. It must be a relief for them when they can be cooler! This fellow/gal just sits and looks around - does not seem to bother anything. If we had chickens, however,I am sure we would be fighting a losing battle!

The picture below, while not a good photograph, shows the constant activity at the feeders. This is how they are until darkness falls every night. At dusk it is even busier - hard to imagine and impossible to get on film/digital!

I was trying to capture the amount of hummers that are constantly at each of our f quart feeders - but it's hard because of their swiftness! Next year we will add another two quarts I think. That should make room for our burgeoning population!
Happy Weekend Everyone!

Hummingbird Heaven

This year the hummingbirds were back early - on March 14th - this year. I generally use Saint Patrick's Day as a "normal" return date. The population that has returned is very vigorous too - we have as many here now as we usually have by the end of April or mid May. We have 5 quart sized feeders out and they get drained at least every other day - and at times some need re-filling every day! We'll add another two at some point.
Believe it not we have had SNOW today - and I always fear for this charming fierce little guys in this cold. I wish I could have a warm spot for them!

Hummingbird Heaven

Despite the cool rainy weather summer flowers seem to be in full bloom. Our Wisterias are lush this year and the hummingbirds seem to love to hang out on the branches when they take a brief break from feeding. We are going through about 20 pounds (or about 9+ kilos) of sugar a week now with 5 feeders out. The little guys really give us a lot of pleasure watching them. I can't think of any creature that has more tenacity - in such a compact little body too. Amazing creatures!

I did finally get around to starting my piece for Michelle Ward's monthly Crusade (aka monthly art project challenge) # 20 - making a paper cast. I never did things like this in school at any age and I was determined to give it a try - what fun ! I really like how my pieces came out but I still have to paint them - will post the result soon. I'll probably be done with Crusade #21 which was just posted soon too. I am determined to not fall so far behind on things again ! Of course I am also still determined to finish my Quilt For An Hour Project too ! I did not actually biy fabric for nothing ! Back to my real world job today - thinking of all the fun things I could be doing right now !!

Hummers Back In Full

We have close to our full summer time complement of hummers now. At peak season we have 5 quart sized feeders up & they are drained by these hungry babies every day! Right now we have 3.5 quarts available & they are going through two full and part of the third in day. All of this hunger and there is SNOW in the forecast for tomorrow and Saturday. Go figure ! I always worry about them in such cold - even though I know how tenacious and hearty they are.

The New Adventures of Hummley The Felted Rufous Hummingbird

I finally am beginning to feel that I am managing to finish some of the projects that were on my must do list this past weekend. Hummley is the newest nestling in the family. This Rufous fellow is needle felted with a gilded gorget & polymer clay formed feet and beak. I perched him on a small madrona branch (a fabulous local wood that is, by itself, a magical thing) that I add some silk flowers to. The base is also made of polymer clay and says, Wish, Dream & Imagine. I was so happy to have finished him this week - since it is, historically the week that the Rufous hummingbirds return to our feeders. I got an order for an Eplet too this week. I will soon be starting to add Blue Birds to the nest as well.
