A Few Moments In The Back Yard

From Mid March through Mid July our days revolve largely - aside from work of course - hummingbird care. We now are going through about 10 quarts a day for these amazing little avian friends. Yes, I really do love them! The other visitor we seem to have on a daily basis is this "red" fox. He/she looks really scrawny but that's just the way the shed their winter coats. On a stroll through the woods you can easily find clumps of hair stranded on blackberry or other low lying bushes. It must be a relief for them when they can be cooler! This fellow/gal just sits and looks around - does not seem to bother anything. If we had chickens, however,I am sure we would be fighting a losing battle!

The picture below, while not a good photograph, shows the constant activity at the feeders. This is how they are until darkness falls every night. At dusk it is even busier - hard to imagine and impossible to get on film/digital!

I was trying to capture the amount of hummers that are constantly at each of our f quart feeders - but it's hard because of their swiftness! Next year we will add another two quarts I think. That should make room for our burgeoning population!
Happy Weekend Everyone!

The fox is beautiful-I love wildlife. The hummers certainly are busy. In California they used to come up to the dining room window and fuss at us if the feeder was empty.

When I read "10 quarts a day" I thought, yep, it's fermented and she's drinking it! Then I saw the pictures....amazing! And to think I get excited when two or three get to fighting over my one feeder. And what are all these flying jewels called?

Wow, 10 quarts a day is a lot of hummingbird food! Our hummingbirds seem to like the orange and grapefruit flowers the best.

Beautiful pictures, Marie! We have a couple of hummer feeders outside, but so far only have visits from the House Finches and a Northern Oriole... go figure!

Wow, Marie!
Here in central NC, I'm glad to see my single male/female pair of ruby-throateds back this year. I can't imagine your crowd, but now I can see them with your photos! It must be so much fun to watch. Do they fight and peep?

Thanks for sharing.

Love seeing all the little hummers you have. They are such a pretty color. I have Black Chined hummers and I am lucky if I get 2 of them on the same feeder. Thanks for sharing.

Oh wow! That's quilte the hummer population! I wish we had that many. Of course the honeysuckle is in bloom now so we don't see much of the hummingbirds.

I love that cute and wary little fox! I have a friend who lives out by the lavender farm on your island --- and she speaks frequently of the foxes that live nearby. I love being able to see a picture. And your hummers are beautiful! Do they buzz one another aggressively? I need to get my feeders out --- I saw one humming around the cherry tree on Friday --- so they must be near. Usually the skies near us are filled with flocks of white pelicans and groups of black cormorants. I sometimes tend to forget to look for the little avian sweeties!

I have to be happy with the 3 birds that come to mine [there may be 4], but boy would I love to have just one of your busy feeders! Thank you for the group shot!
