Hummingbird Heaven

This year the hummingbirds were back early - on March 14th - this year. I generally use Saint Patrick's Day as a "normal" return date. The population that has returned is very vigorous too - we have as many here now as we usually have by the end of April or mid May. We have 5 quart sized feeders out and they get drained at least every other day - and at times some need re-filling every day! We'll add another two at some point.
Believe it not we have had SNOW today - and I always fear for this charming fierce little guys in this cold. I wish I could have a warm spot for them!

Oh, how wonderful! They are so pretty and fun to watch. It will be awhile before they make it eastward. We have them in the summertime at our cabin in the mountains. They sure can dive-bomb! Really fun to watch!

Believe it or not, hummingbirds don't arrive here in Connecticut or at least here in my yard until August. I plant red salvia for them. I've tried feeding them and have bought hummingbird feeders but they ignore them so I try to plant lots of flowers that they like. WE have the ruby-throated hummingbird here in the Northeast. Thanks for posting. Linda

Oh how lucky you are to have these lovely little creatures visit you. I am blessed with very short visits normally in late summer, and by only two or three hummingbirds. I hope that changes one day and that some start nesting here throughout the summer. I'll keep trying.

That's fantastic! Let me say 'Thank you' on behalf of those of us who get our hummers all year and don't have to worry about feeding the travelling hoards! I love these little darlings.

P.S. I love the reflection in the glass feeder in the first photo.

Ooooh, I envy your HBs! I used to feed them lavishly, to the tune of about 10 lbs of sugar a week... but then we got Hollie-Three-Bell-Huntress, our mighty Siamese who unbelievably could catch even these swiftest of little jewels as they came into or left the feeders. So for four years, the feeders have languished. The odd thing is, they still return to our property, check out the feeder areas and hover, looking in the kitchen window as they did when their feeders needed to be refilled. Makes me so sad... But thanks for the pictures! Robin A.
