A Little Bit 'o' Nature

As I was trying to concentrate on the workshop I was also being pulled by some wonderful bits of nature. Paper Bark Birch Trees that happily surrendered a bit of their bark for me to experiment with some calligraphy nibs on. I was enthralled by these trees - their leaves offering a gentle susserus that soothed me.
Since y'all have seen so much in the last few days I thought the a few, gentle, photographs would be enough. I want to wander through a glade filled with Paper Bark Birches now. I took them for granted when I lived back East I think. What amazing, beautiful trees the are~

What In The Heck Have I Been Doing All This Time?!

"Cerebration is the enemy of originality in art."
Martin Ritt

These 3 eagles (can you find all three?)
is what greeted me when I stepped outside this morning

Rather then my Sunday chapter notes for The Artist's Way I thought that I would try to answer my own question: What have I been doing? Where have I been? (The next chapter update for the Artist's Way will return tomorrow.)

There are times when I feel as though I have accomplished nothing. When painful days run together I get so darn frustrated because I just wnat to be painting, drawing, knitting, quilting, - all of the things that bring joy to my life. Thankfully, when I stop for a minute & think about it I realize that I have, in fact, been producing - just not as fast as I generally like to!
Here is a peek at my desk - all of the accouterments of art are there - just waiting for me to sit down and play!
I love fingerless gloves. I wear them all of the time - generally indoors and outdoors in the Winter because my hands get so cold. For Christmas last year I made about a dozen pairs of a simple pattern - and it is one of the few things that I have gifted people with that everyone seemed to enjoy using. That always makes me feel good to get feed back! I found this pattern on Knitty and fell in love with it. It is called "Fetching" and is designed and graciously shared by Cheryl Niamuth from Vancouver, BC - just across the road from me. I love this pattern and my first pair was made from Jo Sharp worsted in 'Lichen' - Oh! Do I love this yarn. I want more and more of it! I just started a pair in Lion Brand WoolEase in 'Lemon Grass'. Thus far I think it will work well. I am on the look-out for a pair of fingerless gloves in a more lacey pattern now.

This is the pair of socks I am working on using Conjoined Creations Flat Feet yarn with their 'Ladder Socks' pattern. The pre knitted pieces are really wonderful to work with. Much tidier than working with skeins of yarn. I like the pattern - just a bit of added texture than the sock pattern I usually use. I am hooked on the pre knitted pieces too. KnitPicks has aome preknitted sock blanks and a started set of dyes that is on my list of must purchase items. I am waiting for another thing from them to get something else back into stock and then I can give dyeing my own blanks a try!

Next up is one of the several silk pen rolls I have been making. This one is for a wonderful lady who sold me a pen that I had been lusting for at a more than very fair price. It is a Pelikan M400 honey tortoise & it has become my most favorite pen. It's nice to lust for a pen and then, when you actually get it, it performs as well as you hoped it would. Oh so beautiful & Oh so smooth. I cannot believe that I have found a pen that eclipses the love I have for my Bexley. I wanted to make this for her as a heartfelt thank you for selling me the pen at such a low price. I will be shipping it off to it's new Austrailian home on Wednesday.
The inside of the roll is Dupioni silk and the outside is from vintage kimono silks from AH!Kimono.

Sunshine & Shadow: One Day Three Different Ways

It's that odd time of year when one day can reveal numerous, glorious faces.
It has been a day to be thankful for all of nature's blessings.

Still Water Bound For The Vernal Equinox

As the first day of Spring rapidly approaches, the rain has started again. Spring teased us with a perfect day yesterday. I opened all of the windows for a 'change of air' and sat, happily at that, in puddles of sunshine for a bit. We are anxiously awaiting the return of fair weather, and, in the mean time, it's a good time to knit, felt and sew !! Hope that wherever you are in this fabulous world you will enjoy a breath of fresh air and welcome Spring with an open heart!

Orcas Island Play Day

Last Monday ,the 10th ,Janet, Jan and I had a gal pal day on Jan's beloved island - Orcas. It was a rather cold, rainy day but we had fun none-the-less. Jan took us us to Olga - where, believe it or not, I had not gotten to visit in 17 years! There is a fabulous artist co-op there & I could have done some serious damage to my plastic had I not been loathe to use it. Jan also took us to a weaver's studio that I had been wanting to see for years. You see, I have an odd quirk. I am perfectly fine going places and seeing people once I have met them - but I am a shy ninny when I don't know someone & simply can't bring myself to "barge in" on a person - even if barging is welcomed! Now I know I will feel no discomfort going there again. I found some wonderful Merino top roving in colors that I had been looking for - perfect for my hummingbirds. After seeing her looms I am now coveting a small loom once again. Ye gads ! It would have to be a gift at this point - they have become so expensive! It was a beautiful studio for a lovely , Maria, makes beautiful things.
Can you find the face in this photo? I found this to be one of the most amazing trees I have ever seen - it's on Jan's beautiful property. What tenacity! What strength! What a will to survive!
The lovely beach that greets you when you enter town.

A gorgeous stone wall looked especially enticing in the fog and rain. The mosses were thriving !
Even the seagulls were grouped closer together. What fabulous, intelligent birds they are ! We all had a great day and decided that another play date would be in order - this next time though on a Saturday when more of the stores will be open!

Soaring

Yesterday was, at last, a beautiful day. Although it was brisk temperature wise, I just wanted to soak up sun! DH & I went on our route and were greeted by SO many birds. Watching Bald Eagles in flight makes me understand why we chose them, rather than a turkey, as our national bird! They are, truly, majestic to watch. I am partial to to hawks though - and the red-tails were there to greet us too. What I find is an unexpected pleasure with eagles are their sweet melodies;more of a true song than a sound.

The birds revisited

Blogging 365 sometimes poses content issues for me. I wish I had something new in the stitchery departments to share each and every day every day but that could get boring. Fast! Something like "...see I finished 10 more rows on this scarf" or "look at these three lines of quilting I did yesterday"... might make for worse content than some photos or mindless games now and then - so I hope that you will bear with me this year! I am also blogging everyday on my photoblog at www.photoblog.com/zquilts & on my shared photoblog with friend Kathy at www.photoblog.com/twozees. I AM almost done with those triangles (Amen!) and I will have them to share with you soon. Four more to finish unless I redo both of the smaller ones in which case it would be 6 to finish up. They are looking better than I had thought they would. I have to admit that I lost some steam for the project after I realized that the 10 I had made (which I liked quite well) were not what were called for in the simple directions. I am, therefore, pleased that I at least like this second batch well enough to send off - and by the deadline I might add !

I have also really been reconsidering what I am doing when I make something and why I am doing it. Intent has been on my mind a lot of late. I tend to fall into a trap of making something to fill a call for entry - or something like that - rather than necessarily making something because it brings me joy. I am going to be careful of this in the future. More careful at any rate. I will make things that being me pleasure. Traditional or art. Plain or fancy. Experimental or tried and true. I am not going to make things just for shows any more either. I want to finish my ongoing project of "Baltimore Beauty My Way" - and that just won't happen if I keep chasing rainbows. I need confirmation that my efforts are p[leasing and worthwhile from my family and friends. Ego strokes are always nice and always appreciated - I always seem to need reinforcement! So thanks in advance for critique and comments in the future!

The photo above is some of the "crew" that greets DH daily on his rounds. This day we had about 50 ravens (NO kidding!!), 4 bald eagles and 3 golden eagles and several varieties of hawks all vying for food bits. It's quite a grand sight!

A friend sent me one of those group emails this morning - and I really liked a part of it especially- which I am reprinting here. No author was noted unfortunately.

"...Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Live simply,

Love generously,

Care deeply,

Speak kindly.......

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...It's about learning to dance in the rain..."

PS: I am still taking suggestions for a name for my beloved camera!

Eagles on the WIng

Yesterday we were greeted by a host of wildlife. Three Golden Eagles, four Bald Eagles, lots of fox. I did not have the right lens with me - but got this shot of a Bald Eagle coming in for a landing. They were really breath taking - and I was happy that I had gone along for the ride !

On The Way To Work

On the way in to work yesterday I was greeted by this beautiful sunrise. I had to pull off and take a photo or two. Have I mentioned how much I love where I live?! Hopefully more stitchery realted posts later this weekend

The Whispers of Mist & Moss

We have a lot of rain at this time of year, but one thing that comes along with that are some fine "crops" of moss - and mist. I love moss. When, as a young girl, I used to read fairy tales I could so easily imagine falling asleep in the forest - making a bed of soft moss. The moss here makes that childhood dream no less compelling to me now - aching bones and all. I am blessed to be able to take a photograph such as this just on the way towards town. How lucky can one girl get anyway?!

Holiday Moon

"Know the true value of time;
Snatch, seize and enjoy every moment of it !"
Lord Chesterfield

This is what I saw as I left for work on Wednesday morning (about 07:30 am). This is the first "real"photo that I took with my wonderful new Nikon D80. I was totally impressed that I got such a good an image - hand held at that - in such a low light situation. The moon and the trees were so beautiful. Perfect. I stopped for a minute before I got in the car & considered how fortunate I am to be able to begin my day with this kind of tender beauty all around me. I am not sure how I managed to live in large cities for so long! Does excess concrete cause madness?! The moment also made me think about how very nice it is to S-T-O-P at times. Really S-E-E . Not rush. Not already "be" somewhere else doing "something" else - but simply be in the moment enjoying what life has to offer. What will you s-e-e- today ?

Go Hug A Tree

I have a thing for trees. My father was, I think, somewhat chagrined that his daughter had evolved into a "tree-hugger". For whatever reasons trees just enthrall me . This tree seems so large & comforting to me. It is old & stately & speaks to me of it's history - and therefore of our history too. It's one of the reasons that I am considering a "tree series". ..well - at least a series of maybe two or three. Go hug a tree today - you'll feel beter for it !

The Calm After The Storm - Literal & Figurative

It's been a rough few days here in the Northwest. Thankfully, today we have some weaks spots of sunshine. In general, the southern counties in Western Washington were the hardest hit by this series of storms & my heart & prayers go out to those who have lost so much in the recent winds, rain, mudslides, avalanches & serious flooding. The nothernmost western counties got snow and/or heavy rain & winds but escaped the worst of the flooding it seems. Mother Nature is, it appears, on a LaNina roll in the West !

In other news, I am on a medical whine roll - so please feel free to tune out if you love all things medical and/or health insurance related. First on my list of rants is health insurance. My doctor prescribed a medicine last week. The insurace company is balking. They have a laundry list of "rules" that need to be followed before they will consider a "need" for the medication. No matter that it is a DOCTOR who thought it was needed, a patient who has gone though years of wondering what would help & has allergies to lots of medicines - making many options not terribly desirable to try. No matter that they have taken almost a week to make a determination of "need" or that in that time both doctor & patient have been in limbo. No matter - whatever. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I had a medical appointment for a routine out-patient procedure on Tuesday morning at 7:00 am. Because the first ferry of the day does not arrive on the mainland until 7:30 am I had to arrange for a hotel room and also to have my friend/sister, Lauren, meet me to play chauffeur. Therefore, on Monday, during the height of the rocking rolling windstorm I was on a ferry headed to "America". I have great faith in our ferries and their crews. The boat rocked more than usual but seeing the fury that mother nature can stir up on the water was pretty wonderful. All of the sea birds were grouped at their favorite inland safety zones and only an occasional cormorant was still out hunting on the open water. Lauren had been hit with 8 inches of snow the day before and she had pasteur issues to contend with - so she met me later than planned at the knitting store - where I had managed to spend a lovely couple of hours 'petting' the yarns and actually taking the time to think about what I wanted/needed. I never even made it to the fabric shops !

My simple instructions required me to report to the hospital at 7:00 am. Pitiful for someone like me who does not like getting up too early even on the best of days ! I woke Lauren from a sound sleep at 6:27 am. We reported on schedule - second to sign in at the newly 'improved' lobby (aka central staging area) . There we sat - not for one but for over TWO hours before I was called to be escorted down the l-o-n-g, l-o-n-g hall to the preop room. I was greeted by efficient, generally plesant but somewhat lackadaisical prep nurses. Granted, I was perhaps a bit less than angelic at that point myself. I have a real , deep-seated anxiety level about hospitals and doctors in general & I can't say that a two hour wait helped my nerves- or blood pressure- any. I discovered that, in fact, my appointment was for 9:30am - I had not had to spend either the money on a hotel nor the time waiting nervously. I just had not been informed! What a happy little camper I was! At last, a familar face appeared. The surgical nurse was, magically, a local woman who commutes to the hospital for work. I finally beagan to think that my nervous system would survive. She wheeled me in to the very imposing operating room. Local angel and her partner nurse - whose name I forget (but she had angel eyes) eased my nerves with their humor and kindness. I liked the doctor too I should add. He was neither too young, nor too old - just the right age to inspire confidence - with a good sense of humor to boot. As soon as I was able to - I fled that hospital like a carrier pidgeon released to deliver an urgent message. I could not wait to get out and away from the place.

I guess my point (if there is one) is that we all get into a routine in whatever jobs we do. Our work is OUR routine and we all have gripes, good days & bad, tired & sad - it's a part of human nature to complain a bit to our co-workers. Some environments however, like the medical fields or the court system (where I work) are not TYPICAL for the public (we hope). They can be intimidating, unfriendly and nerve wracking. A little kindness, some understanding, consideration for other people's valuable time and respect for someone's UNFAMILIARITY with your work environment can go a long long way to make the experinece as "okay" as possible. I am grateful for Lauren's calming presence & willingness to be my designated family member and for those two pairs of angel eyes in the operating room for getting me through a generally unpleasant day.
PS: These are photos I took on the way home yesterday. I could not think of a more beautiful sight to end a long and frustrating two days!
