DH called me outside yesterday to see what "my boy", Chester, was up to. This particular Pileated Woodpecker is a friend that I always enjoy seeing. Well, Chester was having a go at the still not quite ripe pears. Very persistent. He was obviously enjoying this treat. Eventually he knocked it to the ground & then had to find another part of one of the pear trees that suited him. I'm hoping that the pears will get a bit more ripe so that I can use some of them for a pear tarte .. that is if Chester leaves any untouched by his rapaciousness ! Isn't Chester a handsome lad though?!

We get a rare glimpse of Big P from time to time. Always impressive and elusive.
I'm sure there's a quilt in these photographs!
He's cute!
He's a handsome lad, indeed! And what is it about those bad boys that makes them irresistable? ;)
Chester is beautiful! You're lucky to have large trees for him to visit... my poor flock of bird friends just has fence posts and small trees, but I feed them regularly!
He's great. I was so surprised at how big they are when I saw the first one in our woods.
What a fantastic picture of Chester the pear thief & how much fun he must be to watch!
He is a beautiful bird. We see the woodpeckers mostly in the winter around here. I hope he left some pears for you.
