Shekina's Gifts : 2007 Journal Quilt

This is my submission for the exhibit "A Page From My Journal ": Journal Quilts 2007. An amazing array of work by very talented quilt artists is now showing at the International Quilt Festival in Houston Texas. This is the last year for this amazing project. I have learned and grown so much along the " journal quilt way" ! I was also very blessed to have been included in the book "Creative Quilting: The Journal Quilt Project" edited by Karey Bresenhan. Two of my thread painted feline family members -just about full size - are in the book and 5 of my fabulous feline friends are honored to be included in a special exhibit at festival that features the quilts from the book. My friend, Kathy, is responsible for the perfect name of this quilt. She saw it and suggested "Shekina" - the female side of God. Kathy was also a real friend and sent me some photos of the quilt in situ at the show today. Thank You Kathy!! I also got a phone call today from cyber friend Liz, of Stewart Gill Paint fame, she was looking for my quilts. It sure made my day to hear from her! She's a peach - so if you at Festival look for her in the Stewart Gill booth !

Below are some of the words I tried to quilt into the sky area. Many different ways to say "peace'. This shows "Shanti".

I also have another, traditonal, quilt in the special Exhibit "In The American Tradition". It's called "Dresdens Dreaming Red. It's made with vintage fabrics and is one of my favorite full sized (king) bed quilts. I was lucky to be included in this exhibit - and my only frustration is not be able to be in Houston this year to join in the fun with my friends. Next year , God willing, I sure will be there - with my buddy Sarah! Now if I can only have a bit more luck and success and create something worth entering again !

Beautiful quilts. This is my first visit to your blog, but you can be sure I'll be back.

Shekina's Gift is a wonderful name. She has a sense of gentle power.

Dresden's Dreaming Red is also a knock out, bright and cheerful. I love the vintage fabric in this traditional pattern, but the red pops it into contemporary as well.

Love both of these. (I veer between traditional and art quilts too thoguh have been doing less of the traditional recently - now feel inspired to do more). Shakira's gift is wonderful - the sense of peace really comes out. And I love the overall effect of the red with those vintage fabrics.

Beautifully done my dear! Is she painted wholecloth? Pieced or appliqued in the garments? I love the couched yarns and trims and printing and detail.... WELL DONE!
